SUMMARY:Rooted in Place — University-Community Partnerships
LOCATION:ETEC\, Rooms 149/151\, 1220 Washington Avenue\, Albany\, NY
DESCRIPTION:UAlbany’s Research & Entrepreneurship Week brings scientists\
, scholars\, entrepreneurs\, journalists and community leaders together ar
ound a practical question: how does university work become useful beyond t
he university? Now in its fourth year\, the program combines research pres
entations with discussions about communicating discoveries\, building busi
nesses and working with the communities affected by that research.\n\nMond
ay — Innovation & Entrepreneurship\n\nThe week begins with Anna Topol\,
a former IBM Research chief technology officer who now leads quantum-techn
ology startup QLITHIC. Her keynote examines the transition from corporate
leadership to entrepreneurship. Former Wall Street Journal reporter Anne M
arie Chaker follows with a workshop on explaining complex ideas to collabo
rators\, customers and investors. RISE Demo Day gives research teams an op
portunity to present the commercial potential of their innovations.\n\nTue
sday — Research’s Public Impact\n\nUAlbany President Havidán Rodrígu
ez joins Angela Bednarek of The Pew Charitable Trusts to discuss research
’s public value. A journalism panel addresses how findings reach readers
and viewers. Afternoon conversations include university-community partner
ships\, Capitalize Albany President Ashley Mohl on the city’s revitaliza
tion\, and collaborations involving Albany schools\, mental-health service
 s and local government.\n\nWednesday — Health Communication & Pathbreaki
ng Research\n\nHarvard’s K. “Vish” Viswanath speaks about communicat
ion\, equity and wellbeing. UAlbany researchers Robert Rosenswig\, Shawn B
ushway\, Dola Saha and Xin Li then present work spanning anthropology\, pu
blic policy\, wireless communication and computer science. The range is pa
rt of the attraction: the program places questions about human societies a
nd public institutions alongside technological research.\n\nThursday & Fri
day — Albany Nanotechnology Symposium\n\nThe final two days feature the
symposium described below. Its concentrated technical program warrants a c
loser look\, while the whole-week program lets readers choose sessions tha
t match their interests without committing to five full days.\n\nPart of U
Albany Research & Entrepreneurship Week. Session theme: Research’s Publi
c Impact. See official full-week program for session details and registrat
 ion.\n\nAdmission: Free\; daily registration requested\nOfficial details:
