SUMMARY:Marcus Roberts Trio with Bard Conservatory Orchestra
LOCATION:Fisher Center\, Sosnoff Theater\, 60 Manor Avenue\, Annandale-on-H
 udson\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Marcus Roberts (https://www.bard.edu/faculty/marcus-roberts) es
tablished his national reputation through six years touring and recording
with Wynton Marsalis\, then developed a career as a pianist\, composer and
bandleader. His work connects jazz traditions with orchestral music\, and
his approach to the trio gives each musician an active role in shaping te
mpo\, texture and direction.\n\nAt Bard\, the Marcus Roberts Trio joins th
e Conservatory Orchestra for James P. Johnson’s Yamecraw. Johnson was a
central figure in Harlem stride piano\, and this collaboration brings his
music into an orchestral setting without losing the significance of the ja
zz musicians at its center. Roberts’s experience moving between improvis
ing ensembles and symphony orchestras makes him particularly suited to tha
t meeting.\n\nThe surrounding program includes Beethoven’s Symphony No.
4 and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1. Those substantial orchestral works frame t
he jazz-classical collaboration\, giving listeners a full concert rather t
han a brief guest appearance. Roberts’s participation is the reason this
program earns a Regional Extension Pick: a nationally significant musicia
n brings a distinctive artistic practice to a public campus performance. w
